Singer
From “Miss Bống” to inspirational icon
As one of the foremost voices in Vietnamese music, with more than three decades of artistic endeavour and countless achievements behind her, Hồng Nhung continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences thanks to her powerful vocals, refined emotional expression and unflagging creativity.
Beginning her career at 15 with a gold medal at the National Professional Performance Festival, Hồng Nhung swiftly rose to prominence in the Vietnamese music scene of the 1980s. She established her reputation through the works of celebrated composers such as Van Cao, Duong Thu and Phu Quang, and above all through Trinh Cong Son, who dedicated many songs to her associated with the name “Bống”, including Bống Bồng Ơi, Bống Không Là Bống, Thuở Bống Là Người.
Over three decades on stage, Hồng Nhung has consistently reinvented herself, offering audiences a rich array of projects. From large-scale concerts to meticulously produced studio albums, each has carried her hallmark of artistic rigour. Among the most notable was her Live Concert Hồng Nhung hát về Hà Nội, staged at Ho Guom Theatre on 30 November 2024, marking the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital. The evening, which ran for nearly three hours, was a lavishly staged production with sound, lighting and effects to match, leaving a lasting impression on more than 1,000 guests and earning a shower of applause.
In September 2024, Hồng Nhung opened a new chapter in her career with a reality-documentary series entitled Hồng Nhung Stories – Thong dong với Bống. The series comprises candid films in which she recounts life stories, travels and significant encounters, aiming to inspire and uplift her audience. Each episode offers a glimpse into her inner world, from childhood memories in Hanoi to moments of discovering life's beauty. Following its success, she introduced a new song, Giọt nước mắt, composed by Vo Thien Thanh, carrying a message of resilience and urging the Vietnamese people to overcome historical storms and to value the natural world.
In early July 2025, she unveiled another milestone with the song Tự hỏi, a unique project that saw her become the first artist permitted to film at the Hanoi Opera House. Through this song, the singer shared melodies filled with reflection and sorrow, yet underpinned by a steadfast spirit, echoing the path she has chosen through life’s many upheavals.
Although she shines brilliantly on stage, the singer of Nhớ mùa thu Hà Nội has always kept a modest heart, a generous spirit and a remarkable optimism, even during her private battles. At the end of 2024, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of retreating into silence, she chose to speak openly, urging women to care for their health and seek early screening and prevention. Throughout her treatment, the diva remained committed to singing, composing and performing. She also initiated the Chiếc nơ hồng project, bringing together 100 women undergoing cancer treatment, to spread a message of living with optimism, a programme set to launch in the near future.
For Hồng Nhung, “overcoming” is not simply a matter of defeating illness, but of learning to live alongside it, nurturing her body day by day and treasuring every moment. This resilient and imaginative journey has not only allowed her to remain at the forefront of Vietnamese music, but has also transformed her into a profound source of inspiration for the community, particularly women.
