Hoang Chi Thiem

He earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison before becoming a postdoctoral fellow and receiving an award from the Canadian Institute for Astrophysics. His research focuses on cosmic dust and magnetism, shedding light on the origins of the universe. Several of his studies were selected as highlights of 2020 by the American Astronomical Society and have been published in esteemed journals such as Scientific American and The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

In July 2022, he co-founded the Astrophysics Group (SAGI) alongside Dr Nguyen Trong Hien (NASA, USA) and Dr Nguyen Luong Quang (American University in Paris, France) to further the development of astrophysics in Vietnam. The group's activities are overseen by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Education (IFIRSE) under ICISE, based in Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh.

In October 2022, Associate Professor Dr Hoang Chi Thiem became the first Vietnamese scientist to receive the Science Award from the Korean Astronomical Society, recognised for his groundbreaking research on the orientation of dust particles in the universe. He is also the first Vietnamese and only the fourth person in Asia to receive the NCU-Delta Young Astronomer Award from Delta Electronics Corporation and National Central University (Taiwan), an accolade granted to outstanding astronomers under 45 years old worldwide for exceptional contributions to the fields of astronomy and astrophysics.
