Co-founder and Executive Chairman, Banyan Tree Holdings
Former journalist-turned-global hospitality magnate has his eye on sustainability
Ho Kwon Ping, co-founder and executive chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings, has redefined global hospitality with a visionary approach centred on sustainability. Alongside his wife, Claire Chiang, he has transformed Banyan Tree into a pioneering brand managing over 70 properties in 28 countries, each rooted in environmental consciousness.
The genesis of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts dates back to 1994 when Ho converted an abandoned tin mine in Phuket into Asia's first integrated resort, setting a precedent for sustainable tourism. This groundbreaking project rejuvenated the local ecosystem and established a model for eco-friendly luxury that has inspired the industry worldwide.
The resort exemplifies sustainable development, incorporating tree-planting initiatives and community engagement long before such practices became mainstream. In 2024, as Banyan Tree celebrated its 30th anniversary, it was officially rebranded to Banyan Group, reflecting its expansion beyond luxury hospitality.
2024 also marked the launch of several eco-friendly properties in emerging markets, including the Laguna Lakelands project—a residential community designed to blend seamlessly with nature while promoting social sustainability. Ho’s commitment to “rewilding” the environment is evident through partnerships that create pocket forests and restore local ecosystems, fostering a harmonious coexistence between residents and nature.
Ho’s dedication to sustainability has garnered him numerous accolades, including multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards. Among his awards are the London Business School Entrepreneurship Award; CEO of the Year at the Singapore Corporate Awards; and Distinguished Alumnus Award from the National University of Singapore. He is also the only two-time recipient of Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific's (HICAP) Innovation Award (2003) and Lifetime Achievement Award (2019).
Educated at Tunghai University in Taiwan, Stanford University in California, and the University of Singapore, Ho began his career as an economics editor before joining the family business. His visionary leadership continues to shape Banyan Tree's legacy in sustainable luxury hospitality.
