One of the oldest millionaires in Indonesia, Harjo Sutanto of Wings Group started building his empire by selling soap door-to-door

More than 60 years ago, Harjo Sutanto was knocking on doors in East Java trying to sell bars of soap, and today he is one of the richest men in Indonesia. Founder of the Wings Group, the man born Tan Siek Miauw is responsible for the largest maker of soap and other household consumer goods in the country.

Sutanto started the company, then called Fa Wings, in 1948 with his fellow businessman, the late Johannes Ferdinand Katuari. In 1991, the company was re-named Solar Wings, and was producing cleaning goods like detergent bars, fabric softeners and other products. They later expanded to other industries like beauty care, foods and beverages, importing their products all over the world.

Among its many businesses, Wings Group also handles the popular noodle producer Mie Sedaap, and the Indonesian franchise of FamilyMart and Yoshinoya.
