Hank Yang

Sprinter

Hank Yang, “Taiwan’s fastest man”, is now part of the Ten Gold club

Hank Yang came in fifth but ran a season best of 10.21 seconds in his first shot at the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021. The 24-year-old was the first Taiwanese sprinter to join the 100-metre race in 25 years.

Yang first broke national records in 2017 when he clocked 10.22 at the Universiade, garnering him the label as “Taiwan’s fastest man”. The following summer, Yang broke his own record and gained a new personal best of 10.11 seconds. After winning silver at the 2018 Asian Games in the 200-metre sprint, once again beating national records, he spent a month training at East Tennessee State University’s US Olympic Training Site.

Since adopting a new training method, Yang picked up a gold medal in North Carolina and a silver at the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha. Yang clinched first place at the 200-metre at the 110th National Games in Taiwan, making it his 10th gold medal.

Did You Know?

Although Hank Yang made a new national record of 20.23 seconds at the 200-meter race in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, the silver was a huge disappointment, as he finished at virtually the same moment as the first-placer. It was determined, after reviewing high-speed camera footage, that he lost by a scant 0.001 seconds.
