A Malaysian fashion designer based in London, whose contemporary luxury label achieved cult status since its inception in 2014, and has a high profile following that include the likes of British royalty, Hollywood’s A-listers and Southeast Asia’s hottest stars

Encouraged by a tutor he met while studying art and design in Kuala Lumpur, Penang-born Han Chong enrolled in Central Saint Martins, London, where he would eventually create the contemporary label known worldwide as Self-Portrait from ground-up in 2014.

From catching the eye of its first major stockist, Selfridges, in the very same year he launched his first collection, to selling out in just three hours at Net-a-Porter in just a day after releasing Self-Portrait’s designs, the designer is now the creative director and the owner of a global fashion label with flagship stores across London, Taiwan, Bangkok as well as China. The brand has also seen to an impressive list of high-profile clients, which include the likes of Lady Gaga, Korea’s topmost idols BLACKPINK, as well as the duchesses of both Sussex and Cambridge.

Knowing firsthand about being a young fashion graduate with neither connections of the know-how of the industry, Chong would then create a five-year scholarship programme with his alma mater, which ran once a year from 2019 to 2023 and provided a total of five students financial backing to complete their masters in fashion.

To date, the designer doesn’t just design for the everyday woman, but the younger generation as well, having released their children’s collection under Self-Portrait Kids, which holds the same flair of contemporary chic as its more grown-up counterpart.

Han Chong grew up in Sungai Ara, Penang, in his father’s bak kwa store and under his aunt’s wing, who was a local artist herself that instilled in him an appreciation for the arts at a young age.
