Breaking down stigma around women’s health and making cervical cancer prevention more accessible

Hamidah Aidillah Mustafa has spent close to two decades advocating for cancer prevention and women's health, with a particular focus on HPV and cervical cancer. A founding member of the Alliance for Active Action Against HPV (A4HPV), established in 2021 to support Singapore's goal of eliminating cervical cancer by 2030, she has helped bring prevention and screening conversations into communities where discussions around sexual health can still be difficult.

Through A4HPV, Mustafa and her team have organised a number of community activities focused on HPV and cervical cancer awareness. One of their key initiatives, HPV Simple, developed with the Singapore Cancer Society, introduced a self-administered vaginal swab as a more accessible screening option. In 2026, Mustafa also helped develop an HPV Toolkit with the Health Promotion Board, bringing together information on HPV, cervical cancer prevention, vaccination and common myths and misconceptions. The resource is being distributed through organisations including the Singapore Cancer Society and grassroots groups, helping make information about prevention and screening easier to access.

Mustafa’s interest in women's health began almost two decades ago, after she encountered a young woman with cervical cancer who had children of her own. Seeing the potential impact of the disease on a young family stayed with her, and subsequent experiences of friends and family affected by cervical cancer or pre-cancerous lesions reinforced her commitment to prevention and early detection.

Mustafa also founded TalkAboutSex, a platform creating space for women across ASEAN to discuss sexual and reproductive health. The initiative initially attracted criticism and resistance because of the sensitivity surrounding conversations about sex and sexuality. Mustafa subsequently broadened its framing towards women's health and sexual wellness, allowing the work to reach a wider community while continuing to address issues that can otherwise go unspoken.

Her work has recently extended to HPV prevention among men and boys, reflecting her view that reducing HPV-related disease requires broader participation in prevention and vaccination.

Beyond her advocacy work, Mustafa is the founder of Parrot Social, an AI-driven data analytics company, and vice president of the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME), where she supports collaboration between business and social impact initiatives.

In 2026, Mustafa was recognised with the Tatler Front & Female Well-being Award for her sustained work to improve women's health awareness, prevention and access to screening. For Mustafa, the challenge is not only providing information but creating an environment where women feel able to speak openly about their health and seek help early. Her philosophy is simple: “It is always about the intention; not attention. It is about the goal; not the role.”
