Dato' Hamdan Majeed

A graduate of the University of London, Dato' Hamdan Majeed brings a deep understanding of socio-economic dynamics, urban planning, and the complexities of community development. His career has spanned roles in investment banking and advisory services, where he developed a keen sense of the interplay between economic growth and social progress.

At Think City, Hamdan has championed a holistic vision of urban transformation. Rather than focusing solely on physical infrastructure, he believes in the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of a place, fostering social cohesion, and engaging communities directly in the process of city-making.

This philosophy is evident in Think City’s early work in George Town, where efforts to conserve historical buildings and rejuvenate public spaces played a key role in the city’s successful Unesco World Heritage Site status. By prioritising heritage conservation alongside modern urban needs, Hamdan has demonstrated that sustainable development can coexist with the preservation of cultural identity. This has extended to his work in Kuala Lumpur, where he rejuvenates and revives the forgotten corners of the city.

Think City has been pivotal in shaping the Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural District (KLCCD) Masterplan, which aims to revitalise the city’s historical core. This project focuses on preserving heritage sites and promoting the creative economy in Kuala Lumpur, particularly in the areas around the historic Masjid Jamek and Dataran Merdeka. The initiative is designed to foster creative industries, encourage tourism, and boost cultural activities while maintaining the heritage and identity of the area.

In recognition of his visionary leadership and groundbreaking contributions to urban regeneration, Hamdan was awarded a prestigious Special Citation from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in 2023.

Hamdan hopes to leave a legacy as a public intellectual serving the nation and an inspiring changemaker who can disrupt and lead practically and innovatively.
