This virtual artist explores nature, craft and climate through immersive installation
Geraldine Javier began her career after transitioning from nursing to fine art at the University of the Philippines Diliman. With her early recognition—most notably the Thirteen Artists Award in 2003—she has established a unique voice in contemporary art, one that combines rich texture, mixed media and a deep engagement with existential and environmental themes. Her works span acrylics, encaustic, textile craft and metalwork, exploring the interplay of beauty and decay, human fragility and natural forces.
In 2025, Javier extended her reach through two significant international projects. At the Helsinki Biennial, she presented Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Void, a community-based installation in Esplanade Park created with local schoolchildren and recycled materials, and Witness, a textile installation on Vallisaari Island that utilises eco-printed fabric columns to reflect on climate change. She also participated in a group exhibition at the Gyeongnam Art Museum in South Korea, further broadening her international presence. In the commercial domain, one of her pieces—Everything is Tickety-Boo—set a new market benchmark when it sold for a record price at auction in the Philippines.
Throughout her practice Javier remains grounded in craft traditions and local materials, working in Batangas with eco-printing, community collaboration and the rhythms of rural life. Her installations invite reflection on our relationship with nature, the body and time itself, positioning her as a significant figure in Southeast Asian contemporary art.
