For driving community-led solutions to Indonesia's plastic pollution crisis

French-Indonesian environmental activist, filmmaker and entrepreneur Gary Bencheghib co-founded Sungai Watch to tackle Indonesia's plastic pollution crisis by intercepting waste in rivers before it reaches the ocean. A 2023 Gen.T honouree, he has helped expand the organisation's waste collection systems across the country while using data to improve long-term waste management. In 2026, Bencheghib ran from Bali to Jakarta to raise awareness of Indonesia's polluted waterways and inspire collective action. His work earned the Ramon Magsaysay Award, widely regarded as Asia's Nobel Prize.
