FX Harsono is an Indonesian contemporary artist who focuses on disconcerting political and social issues of the day


FX Harsono is one of the most respected contemporary artists, having been an influential figure in the Indonesian art scene for more than 40 years. In 2015, Harsono was awarded the Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art.

His works often point to unsettling or uncomfortable issues facing society. Some of Harsono’s solo exhibitions include What we have here perceived as truth/we shall someday encounter as beauty at the Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta (2013); Writing in the Rain at Tyler Rollins, New York (2012); Testimonies at the Singapore Art Museum (2010); and The Erased Time at the National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta (2009).

Harsono studied art at ASRI, which is now the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI), in Surakarta (Solo) from 1969-1974. In 1975, he was among a group of young artists who founded Indonesia’s Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (the New Art Movement), which emphasised an experimental, conceptual approach, the use of everyday materials and an engagement in social and political issues.
