Insurance is an old-fashioned industry, and Fred Ngan is on a mission to update it to meet the needs of the 21st century. The co-founder and co-CEO of Bowtie, which became Hong Kong’s first digital insurance company in 2018, is aiming to streamline the entire insurance process, from product design to sales and claims. Recognising that in Hong Kong in particular the need for intermediaries to make commissions means that the simple, relatively low-cost insurance products consumers want are often unavailable, he launched Bowtie as an insurance company that does away with the complexities. Bowtie does not use commissions and intermediaries; it also eschews paper documents on which much of the insurance industry still depends.

He originally trained as an actuary and practised in Chicago, Toronto and London between 2007 and 2015. Bowtie, which got US$30 million in Series A funding in late 2018, is his third company. The serial entrepreneur co-founded his first insurtech firm, Coherent, in 2015, followed by Seasonalife, which allowed insurance advisors to compare and illustrate products, in 2016.
