A defining force in contemporary Filipino art whose expressive portraits honour ordinary lives
Elmer Borlongan is one of the most influential contemporary Filipino painters, celebrated for figurative expressionism that centers the dignity, humour and struggle of everyday life. His elongated forms and pared-down spaces have become a signature visual language, making him a favorite among critics, collectors and audiences who connect deeply with his empathetic depiction of ordinary Filipinos.
In 2024 Borlongan showcased new directions in his major solo exhibition Hanap/Buhay at Art Cube Gallery, introducing seven new oil works that illuminate the labour and spirit of the Filipino worker—from vendors and fishermen to street sellers and farmers. The show reaffirmed his position as a chronicler of the Filipino experience whose work is rooted in observation, humanity and social truth.
His paintings have been exhibited internationally at leading art fairs including Art SG and Art Basel Hong Kong, and he mounted a solo exhibition at Ames Yavuz Sydney. Beyond painting, Borlongan is a dedicated advocate of hand-pulled printmaking. Through Pasilyo Press—the studio he runs in Zambales with his wife, artist Plet Bolipata—he continues to explore etching and other graphic methods, producing richly textured works that intensify emotion and narrative.
With new prints inspired by a recent trip to Florence, ongoing commissions and preparations for the If Trees Could Talk Art Biennale in Ibaan, Batangas, in 2026, Borlongan continues to expand his practice while staying grounded in purpose. He describes himself simply as “an artist who interpreted life”—a fitting portrait of a cultural figure whose voice remains essential and deeply human.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Borlongan-serves on the board of the Visual Arts Helping Hands Foundation, where he helps provide and improve the welfare of visual artists in the Philippines.
