The “cooked food” chef turned lauded restaurateur Eldwin Chua has transformed the modest family stall into Paradise Group, an international gourmet business

Paradise Group has come a long way from its modest start as a zi char (Hokkien for “cooked food”) stall in an industrial estate. Today, the company has grown into a restaurant empire, operating a host of fine-dining and casual Chinese culinary establishments under brands such as Canton Paradise, Taste Paradise, Paradise Dynasty, Paradise Teochew and LeNu, all under the guidance of youthful CEO Eldwin Chua.

Chua started out working at his grandfather’s coffee shop in Singapore’s heartlands. He learnt the ropes quickly, doing everything from making coffee to sourcing for ingredients, cooking and cleaning. He took over the establishment from his grandfather in 2002, and eventually turned it into a restaurant. A favourable food review led to a boom in business, and the Paradise Group of today boasts a whopping 13 culinary concepts, more than 100 restaurants and a presence in nine regional markets.

In 2016, Hong Kong-based private equity firm PAG Asia Capital invested an undisclosed amount in Paradise Group to expand the company’s presence in the region. The group reported a turnover of SG$180 million in its 2018 financial year, and is setting its sights on an annual turnover of more than SG$300 million from its projected 150 outlets by 2021.
