Now a real estate tycoon, young entrepreneur Edgar “Injap” Sia II made it big through the Filipinos’ appetite for unlimited rice and chicken oil

He is the chairman and CEO of DoubleDragon Properties, a listed real-estate company that develops the CityMall chain of malls. Injap Sia, however, is more popularly known as the founder of Mang Inasal, an affordable unlimited rice and chicken franchise that grew to over 300 branches nationwide, enticing Jollibee Corporation’s hand to buy it out in 2011. Jollibee head Tony Tan Caktiong then took the new billionaire Sia not just under his wing, but beside him on a runway towards bigger, brighter enterprises. Tan Caktiong now co-chairs DoubleDragon Properties.

DoubleDragon Properties’ subsidiary MerryMart has continued to invest throughout this pandemic. In 2021, it acquired a majority stake in Carlos SuperDrug, a pharmacy that has 27 branches nationwide. It’s a small piece to a larger cog that includes a grocery portfolio in MerryMart, a throw-back to the grocery store built by Sia’s grandfather in the Fifties that his parents ran until the Eighties. Sia sees a bigger picture in this play. He has been building on these small family business models since his venture into Mang Inasal, which features hometown recipes from Iloilo, where he grew up. With a formidable partner in Tan Caktiong, business expansion is inevitable. As the youngest billionaire in the Philippines, failure and success go hand in hand, something his entrepreneurial spirit knows fully well.

Injap Sia got his nickname “Injap” from childhood. It is a coin of two derogatory names: “Intsik” for Chinese immigrants, which his father was, and “Jap” for Japanese, his mother being half-Japanese. Sia turned the derogatory term into a name of pride, leaning on this moniker taken from the two enterprising cultures to create an identity of his own.
