Eddie Teo

Chairman, Council of Presidential Advisers

 

A long-time civil servant holding a raft of positions, Eddie Teo now chairs the government body that advises the Singapore president on matters relating to custodial duties, fiscal issues and appointments

Chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers Eddie Teo has served in various capacities in the civil service for more than 50 years, receiving a number of awards for his contributions to Singapore.

Teo became a civil servant when he joined the country’s Security and Intelligence Division in 1970. He was promoted to the role of director nine years later, and subsequently appointed to head the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Internal Security Department. He later rose to become Permanent Secretary of Defence and Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, and was also Singapore’s high commissioner to Australia from 2006 to 2008 before being appointed to the Public Service Commission. Teo took on his current role in January 2019.

Teo is also the Pro-Chancellor of Singapore Management University, a Distinguished Fellow of the university’s school of social sciences, and a director of the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship. The President’s Scholar, who graduated with an honours degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, UK, is married with two sons.

Instituted in 1975, the Order of Nila Utama is one of Singapore’s most prestigious national honours. It has been conferred upon only a select group of recipients including Teo, ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh, and former deputy prime minister Toh Chin Chye.
