Multimedia reporter, Rappler
Rappler’s influence extends beyond the Philippines, as it spearheads the advocacy for press freedom and the worldwide fight against misinformation
Dwight de Leon is a political reporter at Rappler whose clear-eyed coverage of Congress, national policy and the Marcos Jr administration has made him one of the newsroom’s most reliable interpreters of power. He blends sharp legislative tracking with accessible storytelling, often unpacking how decisions in the halls of government reverberate through local communities and public institutions. His reportage spans the Commission on Elections, regional governance and the shifting dynamics of national politics.
Before joining Rappler, de Leon worked as a program producer and writer for several flagship shows on the ABS-CBN News Channel, including Top Story, ANC Headlines, Balitang America and The World Tonight. He began honing his broadcast instincts early, overseeing student programmes for DZUP 1602 while studying broadcast communication at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he graduated magna cum laude. Originally from Oriental Mindoro, he has also completed a full marathon—an endurance that echoes in his approach to political reporting.
Dwight de Leon is recognised among the Tatler Most Influential Philippines honourees along with fellow journalists Pia Ranada, Bea Cupin, JC Gotinga, Jairo Bolledo, Ailla Dela Cruz, Patrick Cruz and Lian Buan to represent Rappler, which has become a cornerstone of Philippine digital journalism and a globally recognised champion of press freedom.
Founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and other veteran journalists, Rappler is known for its investigative reporting, data-driven storytelling and community participation. Rappler is also known for its early warnings on digital disinformation, its advocacy for responsible technology and its work in training the next generation of journalists through fellowships and newsroom innovation. Rappler’s influence extends beyond the Philippines: its reporting, research and press freedom advocacy have shaped international dialogue on democracy, online abuse and the future of independent media.
