Dr Vimala Perumal is a leading figure in Malaysian Tamil cinema, breaking new grounds as a filmmaker, academic and advocate for creative storytelling. As co-founder of Veedu Production and assistant professor and deputy dean at Multimedia University, she is nurturing the next generation of creatives. Her films have transformed the landscape of local Tamil-language cinema, with milestones including Vilaiyaatu Pasange (2011) being the first Malaysian Tamil film screened on Astro Box Office, while Vedigundu Pasangge (2018) was the first Malaysian Tamil film to surpass RM1 million at the box office. In 2023, she became the first Malaysian film director to receive the UAE Golden Visa for Arts and Culture, recognising her international contributions to filmmaking.
