This actress raises the Filipino flag on the international acting stage

History is kind to firsts—and actress Dolly de Leon has a lot of firsts under her belt. In 2022, she became the first Filipino nominated at the Golden Globe Awards for her role in Triangle of Sadness. This was followed by a nomination at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) the following year.

Born on April 12, 1969, in Manila, Philippines, de Leon was classically trained with a Bachelor of Arts in theatre arts from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, receiving accolades for her performances in over 30 stage productions.

In 2023, de Leon joined the roster of actors invited to the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which hands out the Oscars. She also premiered alongside Kathryn Bernardo in her first headlining role in the Star Cinema movie A Very Good Girl. De Leon even won her first Philippine acting award, taking home the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Iti Mapukpukaw at Cinemalaya 2023.

Her international career has continued to thrive, with an announcement in June 2023 that said she was cast in the American TV series Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2; the series is top-billed by Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman.

De Leon was recognised at the 2023 Tatler Ball with the Arts and Culture Award.

“This is the reality for most of us [working class]. They hire us for talents they do not intend to maximise. The talents or extras get as little as 500 pesos per day, and they are made to wait out in the sun with cardboard boxes as chairs. They get treated like garbage. That needs to change.”
