For breaking down barriers with his viola virtuosity

In 2022, for the first time in the Berlin Philharmonic’s 140-year history, the world’s leading orchestra appointed a Chinese musician to its ranks. Formerly the Munich Philharmonic’s first principal viola, Diyang Mei started playing the violin at five, before moving on to the viola and notching up some of the world’s most prestigious viola awards, including first prize at the ARD International Music Competition.
