Didit Hediprasetyo

Familial connections have little bearing on world-class designer Didit Hediprasetyo’s success as he forges his legacy in fashion

Profile

Didit Hediprasetyo comes from a prominent political family in Indonesia. He is the grandson of former Indonesian president Suharto, as well as the son of politician Prabowo Subianto. But his foray into the fashion realm reveals his determination to tread his own path.

As a designer, Hediprasetyo is recognised globally for his work with urban silhouettes, structured draperies and subdued embellishments that make his designs sophisticated yet robust.

Hediprasetyo won the Silver Thimble Award at art and design school Parsons, Paris in 2006, confirming his status on the international stage.

Pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen was seen sporting one of his pieces during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, while international singer Anggun also wore his work. He is only the second artist after Karl Lagerfeld to design the BMW Individual 7 Series, of which BMW produced only five units.

Hediprasetyo graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris, and in 2018, he was nominated as an Art Fellow by the T Washington Scholars Programme from the University of Washington, Seattle, US.
