Championing Asian pop and shaping Singapore’s cultural identity through music and theatre

Dick Lee is a celebrated Singaporean singer-songwriter, playwright and cultural icon whose works, including Home, have shaped the nation’s cultural identity. He began his musical journey in 1971 at just 15, performing with his band Harmony and later with his siblings in Dick and the Gang. He released his debut album Lifestory in 1974, introducing his signature blend of western pop and Asian influences. A pioneer of the “Asian pop” movement, Lee championed the inclusion of regional sounds in mainstream music, culminating in his breakthrough 1989 album The Mad Chinaman, which went platinum in Singapore and established him as a regional star.

After moving to Japan in 1990, he collaborated with luminaries such as Sandy Lam, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Anita Mui. His 1997 composition Home became an enduring anthem of national pride, followed by We Will Get There (2002) and Our Singapore (2015).

Beyond music, Lee has directed multiple National Day Parades and acclaimed stage musicals such as Beauty World and Hotpants. In 2023, he directed the immersive dinner theatre Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding. He marked Singapore’s 60th birthday in 2025 with the Singapop! exhibition at ArtScience Museum and a return performance at the National Day Parade. He turns 70 in 2026 with a tribute concert planned.
