The Creatives | Injecting eclecticism onto the canvas as well as her closet, this artist takes self-expression to another level

With her buzz cut, artist Dawn Ang, also known as Aeropalmics, comes off as an aesthetic risk‑taker. While she does describe her style as experimental and free, her hairstyle, which she sports to deal with Singapore’s humidity, points to another quality of hers: practical. “I don’t think [my buzz cut] is bold, I just wanted to try it out,” says Ang. Indeed, trying things out is Ang’s forte—one that is expressed both through her art in myriad forms, including painting and sculpture, as well as her clothes and make‑up. “From young, I was attracted to all kinds of styles. I never felt like I wanted to stick to one thing. It’s important to always [keep] your mind open to being changed,” she says. But even the sartorial chameleon has some consistencies; she lists oversized sweaters, jeans and sneakers as items that would be found in an Aeropalmics Starter Pack. What do all the things in Ang’s colourful closet have in common? Craft. As the artist puts it: “The most random things can be made well and I’ll just be amazed by them. I really like things that are designed well.”
