HSBC Asia joint chief David Liao leads the banking giant’s greater China operations

David Liao is the co-chief executive of HSBC Asia-Pacific and a group managing director of HSBC. He serves in the role alongside Surendra Rosha, as the company continues to strengthen its focus on a region where it makes the majority of its profits. The pair took over in 2021 following the retirement of Peter Wong, who became the bank’s non-executive chairman.

Liao joined HSBC in 1997, and has been employed in roles including head of global banking and markets for HSBC China; president and chief executive of HSBC China, a role he filled from 2015 to 2020; and, from 2020 to 2021, head of global banking coverage for Asia-Pacific. Before joining the company, he worked for IBJ International, now part of Mizuho International. Liao is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
