Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift is the CEO of the Malaysian stock exchange Bursa Malaysia and has more than 25 years of experience in the banking, insurance and financial services industry.

A chartered accountant, Swift began his career in Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in 1986 and rose up the ranks at Bank of Singapore (Australia) Limited after joining the corporate finance division. Later at Gas Malaysia, he was promoted to CEO after serving a year as general manager of corporate finance.

After a tenure with Deloitte Consulting, he returned to the banking industry to head the enterprise financial-services group of Maybank. Before he was appointed to assume the top post of the country’s stock exchange, he was the CEO and group managing director of MAA Group Berhad.

Swift sits on several boards in addition to the subsidiary companies within Bursa Malaysia. He is a board member of Securities Industry Development Corporation, and was appointed to the board of the Capital Market Development Fund and the Financial Reporting Foundation by the Ministry of Finance. He is also an appointed member of Anugerah Kecemerlangan Industri, a corporate-recognition award introduced by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to acknowledge outstanding Malaysian companies.

Aside from being a fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand, as well as a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, Swift is also a chartered tax adviser with the Tax Institute of Australia.
