The CEO of Malaysia’s stock exchange works to make Bursa a leading, global marketplace

With over 25 years of experience in banking and financial services, Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift is dedicated to realising Bursa Malaysia’s vision of becoming ASEAN’s leading, sustainable and globally-connected marketplace.

Since assuming the role of CEO of the Exchange in 2019, Umar has played a catalytic role in the economy’s transition to green. He has actively driven ESG adoption among public-listed companies, and facilitated the greening of Malaysia’s supply chain, through digitalisation and multi-stakeholder collaborations. Umar also advocates as a leading voice for sustainability through his roles as chairman of the CEO Action Network (Malaysia), advisor of the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei, and co-chair of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (UN SSE) Advisory Group on Carbon Markets. Umar was also instrumental in spearheading an interoperable ESG data system within ASEAN.

Under Umar’s visionary leadership, Bursa Malaysia is pivoting into a multi-asset exchange with new offerings such as the Bursa Carbon Exchange, BR Capital, and democratising investment access by delivering fresh, innovative products direct to retail investors.
