Dato’ Mohamad Nasir bin Mohamed, better known as M. Nasir, is a celebrated icon in the Malaysian music and arts scene. With a career spanning over four decades, he is a multi-talented artist—a singer, songwriter, composer, actor, producer, and painter. His profound influence has earned him the nickname “sifu” (master), reflecting his mentorship of numerous artists across various genres.

M. Nasir began his journey in the 1970s as a songwriter, but it was in the 1980s that he truly flourished, working with legends like Sudirman Arshad and Alleycats. His solo work blends traditional Malay music with rock and pop, with acclaimed albums such as Canggung Mendonan (1993) and Phoenix Bangkit (2001). His music often incorporates philosophical themes rooted in Malay culture.

In addition to his musical achievements, M. Nasir has acted in notable films and lent his voice to animated characters, including the legendary warrior Hang Tuah in the acclaimed Puteri Gunung Ledang (2004) movie. He is also an accomplished painter, having held sold-out exhibitions that showcase his unique artistic style.

In recent years, M. Nasir has championed the cause of elevating the local music scene, aiming to make it a staple that rivals international markets. He has also become an ambassador for Mercy Malaysia, reflecting his commitment to social causes.

Currently, he is focused on nurturing new music and upcoming concerts while tending to his garden. Recognised with several awards, M. Nasir continues to be a pivotal figure in Southeast Asia’s cultural landscape, inspiring new generations of musicians.

Did You Know?


M. Nasir attended the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore and graduated with a diploma in Western painting in 1978.
