The Alleycats co-founder has harmonized cultures and generations with timeless classics
Thiagarajan K.R. Arumugam, known as Dato’ David Arumugam, is a famous Malaysian musician and one of the founding members of the legendary band Alleycats. With his brother Loganathan, David helped shape the music landscape of Malaysia through the band’s unique multi-ethnic approach, performing songs in Malay and connecting with audiences across the region. Formed in the late 1960s, Alleycats, rose to fame in the 1970s by blending rock, ballad, and pop, capturing the attention of diverse audiences across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The band’s music resonated deeply with fans, with hits such as Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu and Sekuntum Mawar Merah becoming timeless classics that continue to be loved by Malaysians today.
David’s passion for music was cultivated from a young age, heavily influenced by his mother, a Carnatic classical singer and former radio announcer. He and his brother often accompanied her to performances, which instilled in them a deep love for music. At 17, David left school to pursue music full-time, as he felt his academic studies were not aligned with his true calling.
Throughout his career, David and Alleycats released over 20 albums, with their songs still beloved by fans today. In recognition of his contributions to the Malaysian music industry, he was awarded the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) in 2009, granting him the title “Dato’.” David remains a respected figure in the industry, with Alleycats’ legacy continuing through their classic hits and live performances as well as symbols of unity in Malaysia .
