Group managing director, Sime Darby Property
The highly accomplished executive has a strong track record in transforming companies
Having built a career shaping companies into market leaders in their respective industries and an in-demand speaker on the subject of building future homes, Dato’ Azmir Merican is the group managing director of Sime Darby Property (SDP), one of Malaysia’s largest property developers.
Assuming his latest role in April 2020, he has been instrumental in priming SDP for its pure play pivot to a real estate player and building recurring income from multiple revenue streams. The blueprint for this highly specific goal is what drives the company’s vision and mission.
He shares: “Our purpose is to be a value multiplier for people, businesses, economies and the planet. So effectively, we move to become a triple-bottom-line organisation. We are no longer here to do business purely for profit, but also to benefit people and the planet.”
As a reputable real estate developer, SDP has a broad reach and establishes its footprint in the UK by joining a Malaysian consortium to build central London’s renowned Battersea Power Station Project. Prior to Sime Darby, Azmir was credited with transforming UEM Edgenta into a digital powerhouse and regional market leader in the asset management and infrastructure realm.
“The whole building sector has been very resistant to change. So I think we are looking at how, with ESG and sustainability, we have to change the way we build and the way we live in our homes.”
