Chief information officer Daniel Xu keeps Tencent’s technology ticking

The co-founder, in 1998, and chief information officer of Tencent, Daniel Xu is in charge of the technical development of its various online properties, as well as communities and customer relations. Internet giant Tencent is one of the world’s largest companies, and has been valued at close to US$1 trillion; it owns brands including WeChat and QQ, and is the world’s largest gaming company and China’s largest music provider.

It also has interests in everything from video streaming to AI medicine. Xu is reputed to be the only individual within the company who doesn’t report directly to president and executive director Martin Lau, the person in charge of its day-to-day operations. Before joining Tencent, he worked at Shenzhen Data Telecommunications Bureau, where he had a role encompassing software system design, network administration, marketing and sales.

In 2017, Daniel Xu was the Lulu Chow Wang senior Asian scholar at Columbia Business School in the US, part of a programme established by the eponymous financial and philanthropic pioneer to foster China-US dialogue.
