Principal Architect, C.T. Onglao Architects, Inc
This architect's influence has extended from designing spaces to helping oversee the standards of professional practice
Good architecture begins with understanding how people live, not imposing a signature style on them. Filipino architect Conrad Onglao has built his practice around this principle, combining contemporary design with tropical sensibilities. After studying at the University of Santo Tomas and spending 15 years practising in the United States, he returned to the Philippines, bringing an international perspective to residential, hospitality and institutional projects.
His portfolio includes Balesin Island Club, Pangulasian Island Resort in El Nido and the redesign of Bahay Pangulo, the President’s official residence. Across these varied settings, his work reflects an interest in how architecture can respond to its environment while serving the needs of those who use it. More recently, conversations around the Filipino home have increasingly emphasised natural light, airflow and spaces that support wellbeing, concerns that align with his approach to residential design.
In 2025, Onglao was appointed commissioner of the Professional Regulation Commission, following his tenure as chairman of the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture. The role extends his influence from designing spaces to helping oversee the standards of professional practice. His challenge now is to bring the same attention to function and human needs to the institutions responsible for the built environment.
