A grand slam run is just the start for the tennis prodigy
The hopes of an entire city are a heavy weight for a 21-year-old to shoulder, but as Hong Kong’s top tennis player, that’s what Coleman Wong experienced in the summer of 2025, when he became the first player from the city to reach the third round of a grand slam.
He was knocked out of the US Open by world No 15 Andrey Rublev, but not before pushing his opponent to five sets. He returned to Hong Kong a hero, jumping almost immediately into pulling off an upset at the Davis Cup in both singles and doubles against Uzbekistan.
Wong started playing tennis aged five and moved to Spain at the age of 17 to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy. He enjoyed a successful junior career, winning the doubles events at the 2021 US Open Boys and 2022 Australian Open Boys tournaments.
He was back on his home turf in October 2025 for the Ultimate Tennis Series tournament, where he faced Rublev again, and spoke to Tatler proudly about his origins and representing his hometown.
“Hong Kong is my home. I grew up here; I picked up my tennis racket when I was five years old in Victoria Park. I’m just a normal kid from Hong Kong who really loves tennis. I really want to tell and prove to Hong Kong people that, being from Hong Kong, [while it’s] such a small place, we can still be professional tennis players.”
