Chng Hak-Peng of Singapore Symphony Orchestra is an experienced business executive and a lover of classical music

Chng Hak-Peng is the chief executive of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), the country’s flagship classical music ensemble. Chng, who was named to the role in 2015, spent seven years before that working as a volunteer with the management and musicians before rising to become deputy chairman of the company.

The SSO’s performing homes are the 1,800-seat Esplanade Concert Hall and the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, at which it puts on over 60 concerts a year. The SSO won third place in classical music magazine Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year Award in October 2021; it was the only Asian orchestra in contention for the accolade. A month before, the orchestra also launched SSOLounge, a streaming platform that lets audiences watch both pre-recorded and live performances at home.

Chng also has experience working in private equity and mergers and acquisitions. He spent eight years with management consultants Bain & Company collaborating with CEOs and private equity funds on strategy and execution. He is also the current chairman of the Tech Whye Secondary School advisory committee.

Did You Know?


The SSO made its debut at the Singapore Conference Hall on 24 January 1979 with a performance featuring an ensemble of 41 musicians, including 13 Singaporeans such as music director Choo Huey, pianist Ong Lip Tat and acting leader Lynette Seah.
