Liao Ching-Sung shapes the future of Mandarin-language film

Veteran film editor Liao Ching-Sung — Uncle Liao to his industry peers — is the dean of the Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy, which has successfully nurtured up-and-coming Mandarin-language talents in film.

Since 2009, the Academy has been mentoring emerging scriptwriters, directors, and cinematographers. Here, they collaborate in creating a film for screening at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, often with the guidance of distinguished filmmakers and industry professionals. As dean, Liao cultivates the next generation of filmmakers by passing on his wealth of experience in the industry and mentoring.

Liao began his career as an editing technician at Central Motion Picture Corp. in 1974. During the ‘80s, he edited films for Taiwan New Cinema directors. He directed his first film in 1987. With over 30 years of editing work, he served on the executive committee of the 38th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards in 2001. He won the Golden Horse Award for Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year in 2002.

His works include A Time to Live and A Time to Die, The Terrorist, and Dust of Angels. He received the prestigious Special Contribution Award at the 55th Golden Horse Awards in 2018.
