Documentary director Chin Yuan Ke marries passion and advocacy through art

Chin Yuan Ke’s illustrious career in filmmaking started in 1980, when he started documenting Taiwan’s natural landscape. With several nature documentaries credited to his name, Ke has become the unsung guardian of Taiwan’s natural beauty, bringing awareness to key environmental issues with every feature presentation.

In 1998, he joined the News Department at Taiwan’s Public Television Service and became a full-time photojournalist, producing films on coastal damage, forest conservation, and environmental hazards. In 30 years, he has created over 25 documentaries, 400 in-depth video features, and 200,000 images on Taiwan’s terrain. His work has earned recognition at more than 70 major film awards all over the world. The documentary Sacred Forest earned Ke his third Best Directing Award for a Non-Drama Program at the 2020 Golden Bell Awards, proving that his vision and advocacy resonate with this generation.

Besides highlighting Taiwanese biodiversity, Chin Yuan Ke has also travelled to the Arctic Circle, Antarctica, and Mount Everest to address glacial concerns.
