Venture capitalist Chibo Tang has invested in most of Hong Kong’s fastest growing companies

The managing partner of venture capital firm Gobi Partners, Chibo Tang is one of Hong Kong’s most successful investors. He joined the company in 2009 and spent his first eight years in Shanghai before moving to Hong Kong. Established in 2002, Gobi has backed more than 270 start-ups in 13 countries. In Hong Kong, it manages the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund, and either via Alibaba or directly through Gobi’s fund, Chibo has invested in an extensive line-up of Hong Kong’s most exciting new businesses in recent years, including Airwallex, Prenetics, WeLab, OneDegree, Animoca Brands, Gogovan, Qupital, Aqumon, and Sandbox VR.

In 2024, Gobi Partners continued to strengthen its position in the investment landscape, notably backing Singapore’s Synagistics, which marked Hong Kong’s first de-SPAC listing. The firm also invested in DCAP to enhance financial inclusion in Malaysia, GenEdit Bio to advance genome editing technologies, and JAZRO to expand robotics education for children.

Tang started his career as a strategy consultant at innovation consulting firm Monitor Group, and was also Asia-Pacific senior manager of corporate strategy for engineering and technology company Bosch. His investing acumen has won him recognition, including the Silicon Dragon Venture Capitalist of the Year 2017 and the Global Corporate Venturing Emerging Leader 2020.
