Social activist
At the forefront of Taiwan’s gay equality and same-sex marriage movement is Chia Wei Chi, who has been petitioning for Taiwan’s constitutional interpretation of same-sex marriage for more than 30 years. In 2017, with Chi still leading the battle, the Constitutional Court ruled in Interpretation No. 748 that same-sex couples will be allowed to marry on or before May 24, 2019.
In 1986, he volunteered in the Department of Health and devoted himself to AIDS prevention and treatment. Regarded as a symbol of Taiwan’s LGBTQ community, he participates in the Pride parade every year and continues to use his influence to fight for LGBTQ rights. He is one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in 2020.
