Chi Yi Chang

Chi Yi Chang joined Taiwan Design Research Institute, formerly known as Taiwan Design Center, in March 2020 as the organization’s president. With his diverse background as an architect, educator, and policy maker, he brings an integrated point of view that thrusts design into the realm of tactile experiences. Helmed by Chang, the new TDRI focuses on social design, design for policy, and sustainability, using a more knowledge- and research-based approach to aesthetics.

Chang has also been a board member at the World Design Organization since 2019. From 2011 to 2014, he was deputy county governor of his hometown Taitung—now listed as one of the ten emerging tourist cities in Taiwan—where he championed the implementation of aesthetics in local development. As vice chairman at Xue Xue Foundation, and professor at the Graduate Institute of Architecture at the National Chiao Tung University, he promotes aesthetic education to cultivate creativity among the youth. Chang has also published several books, including the Concept of Aesthetic, European Charm: New Architecture, and Contemporary Architecture of North American in Focus. He received his Master in Design Studies from Harvard Design School in 1994 and his Master of Architecture from Ohio State University in 1992.
