Choreographer Tsung-lung Cheng brings the streets of Taiwan to the world through dance

At the heart of Tsung-lung Chen’s art is a colorful childhood and memories of old Taipei. An internationally renowned dancer and choreographer, Cheng comes from a family of entrepreneurs and started out selling slippers as a child. He took his first dance class at age 8 and, years later, his experience as a street hawker continues to inspire his choreography.

He joined Cloud Gate upon graduation from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2002. He has served as artistic director of Cloud Gate 2 since 2014. Since then, he has earned top recognition at various international competitions, including the Premio Roma Danza International Choreography Competition in Italy, the 16th MASDANZA Choreography Competition in Spain in 2011, and the Taishin Arts Award 2012, the most prestigious honor for the arts in Taiwan.

In 2016, his work 13 Tongues debuted at the National Theater as commissioned by the Taiwan International Festival of the Arts. Cheng’s noteworthy career came full circle as the acclaimed production—inspired by the dynamic streets he knows so well—kicked off its North American Tour in October 2022.
