An artist who integrates traditional bamboo art with modern design
Born in 1987, Cheng Tsung Feng is a rising craft artist from Hsinchu, Taiwan, who has won numerous accolades internationally for the innovative combination of traditional bamboo art and modern design. With a background in industrial design and deeply nourished by Taiwan’s craft culture, Cheng Tsung Feng is particularly skilled in the use of bamboo. He employs simple design language and rich material combinations to transform bamboo into highly modern installation art, presenting unique visual impacts in large exhibitions.
Cheng Tsung Feng’s works emphasise the interplay of materials, shapes and production methods, allowing natural elements to burst forth with new vitality in the dialogue between craft and design. One of his representative works, the Fish Trap House series, is inspired by ancient bamboo fishing traps. Through a modern perspective, he applies traditional bamboo weaving techniques to architecture and installation art. These large installations not only showcase the fragile beauty of bamboo but also reflect his keen perception of materials and respect for the spirit of craftsmanship.
As an innovative pioneer in Taiwan’s craft scene, Cheng Tsung Feng has received several international awards, including the American International Design Excellence Awards, the German iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award. He firmly believes that business and art are not mutually exclusive but can instead serve as resources for creative endeavours. His works incorporate a profound understanding of craft culture and elevate Taiwanese craftsmanship to an international stage through cross-border collaborations with top luxury brands like Hermès, Cartier’s Trinity 100th anniversary and Bottega Veneta. In his studio, Origin Architects & Planners, located in Nantou, the dialogue between creation and tradition continues, constantly breathing new life into bamboo art.
