Actor, founder, Beike
The Ingenues | The actress, digital creator and entrepreneur’s deep personal connection to fashion was cultivated through her parents’ entertainment careers.
Actor and entrepreneur Chen Yixin gained recognition for her roles in various television dramas, particularly in the lead role in Teenage Textbook: The Series (2021) and her performance in the Netflix series Mr. Midnight: Beware the Monsters (2022). She is also the founder of swimwear line Beike, which specialises in catering to the needs of Asian women.
As the daughter of actors Edmund Chen and Xiang Yun, to say that Chen Yixin’s relationship with fashion is written in the stars is an understatement. She recalls fond memories of accompanying her parents to the Star Awards, the highest honour in local Chinese television. She would help to hold the train of her mother’s gowns, as they walked up the stairs to the television station. “Just looking at my mother getting all dressed up, and the spectacle put up by her glam team, incited a sort of sartorial awakening in me,” Chen shares.
With two celebrated figures in Singapore entertainment within such close proximity, Chen has a front-row seat to the intricacies of fashion—and acting, too, now that she has joined the industry. Her mother, who is well-known for her impeccable taste and timeless grace, has an incredibly profound influence on Chen’s aesthetic sensibilities. “Not many people know this about my mother, but she’s the biggest shopaholic. She has the nicest things, and her wardrobe is a veritable treasure trove. I’ve been complicit in her procurement of some of the most precious articles of fashion,” Chen enthuses. “Now that she’s seen me come into my own, with my own style, I’ve also inherited some of the priceless vintage pieces she owned.”
Chen’s personal relationship with fashion further deepened with the launch of Beike in April 2024. Targeted at Asian women, the brand seeks to address the issues surrounding body type. With a year spent on research and development, Beike also offers petite customers padded alternatives that are often lacking in regular swimwear from western brands.
“I need to show up for women who look like me, because if not me, then who?”
