A Malaysian badminton player and 2025 World Champion, Chen Tang Jie made history as part of Malaysia’s first-ever mixed doubles world champion duo
A resilient and determined badminton talent, Chen Tang Jie has emerged as one of Malaysia’s most formidable mixed doubles players together with partner Toh Ee Wei. The duo delivered historic glory on August 31, 2025—Merdeka Day—defeating China’s world number two pair Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin to claim Malaysia’s first-ever mixed doubles world championship title in the tournament’s 48-year history.
Chen's journey in badminton began at the age of seven, when his uncle introduced him to the sport at the New State Chinese Recreation Club (NSCRC) in Ipoh. With family encouragement and guidance from his uncle, Chen quickly developed a passion for the game and progressed towards competitive play.
His first international breakthrough came at the 2016 BWF World Junior Championships, where he partnered with Toh Ee Wei to claim bronze in the mixed doubles category. Following their success, the pair pursued separate competitive pathways with different partners for six years, allowing each to develop their individual game. They reunited in late 2022, forming a partnership that would ultimately establish them as one of badminton's most formidable mixed doubles teams.
Since their reunion, Chen-Toh have been relentless, capturing their fourth career title with their world championship triumph and propelling them to world number three. Their aggressive attacking style and explosive court sense have earned them the nickname the "gangster duo" for their fearless approach.
Chen’s achievement marks a historic milestone for Malaysian badminton, cementing the pair's status as world champions and establishing them among the elite mixed doubles partnerships globally.
