Profile

Thai-Japanese entrepreneur and mixed martial artist Chatri Sityodtong is the founder, chairman and chief executive of One Championship, a Singapore-based sports media company that is Asia’s largest. The company focuses on placing MMA in the cultural context of Asia and has a broadcast reach of over 2.7 billion viewers in more than 150 countries. Sityodtong is also the host of The Apprentice: One Championship Edition, a reality TV show that tests physical, mental, emotional strength as well as business acumen.

Sityodtong grew up in Thailand as a child before making his way to the US to study at Harvard Business School. After earning his MBA, he launched a Silicon Valley start-up called NextDoor Networks with his friends then moved to New York to work as a hedge fund manager. He left a decade later to pursue his love of muay thai, launching martial arts academy Evolve MMA in Singapore in 2009. Two years later, he established One Championship with ESPN Sports senior executive Victor Cui. “If there’s anything that unifies the continent, it would be Asian values and martial arts,” he said in a cover story interview with Tatler Singapore.

Sityodtong has won several accolades, including being named “Asia’s Second Most Powerful Person in Sports” by Fox Sports and one of “Asia’s Top 100 Business Leaders” by Business Insider. He is a fierce believer that the future is Asian saying “it isn’t a coincidence that so many highly scalable global businesses are starting to come out of Asia. One Championship is a part of that.”

“The runway for us is far longer, and the payoff is bigger. That’s why we are focused on Asia. Our Western counterparts sell blood sports and violence, we sell heroes.”
