Most impact investors focus on buzzy sectors of the economy like tech. Chang Sun focuses on something very different: agriculture. He is the founder of agricultural impact investing company Black Soil Group, which aims to modernise China’s agricultural industry and improve productivity by consolidating land and scaling up operations.

Since 2017, he has also been the head of China for alternative asset management firm TPG; before establishing Black Soil Group in 2015, he spent 20 years as chairman of Asia Pacific at Warburg Pincus, setting up the private equity firm’s China business. He is also the founder and honorary chairman of the China Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, and the founder and executive vice chairman of the China Real Estate Developers and Investors’ Association. He is also a member of the Asia executive board of the Wharton School and a governor of its Lauder Institute, and a member of the Asia Pacific council of The Nature Conservancy.
