Chan Yui-lam has setting a new Asian record at the 2024 Paralympics
Chan Yui-lam is a celebrated Paralympic swimmer, who won a silver medal in the Women’s 100-metre Butterfly S14 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Setting a new Asian record with a time of 1:03.70, she continues to raise the bar in her classification for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Chan's achievements in Paris followed an impressive performance at the 2023 Asian Para Games, where she emerged as Hong Kong’s most decorated athlete with two gold and three silver medals.
Chan’s competitive journey began at the age of 10, inspired by her siblings’ involvement in the sport. After narrowly missing a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics by just 0.15 seconds, she refined her training regimen to achieve record-breaking successes in Paris. Always committed to excellence, her next goal is to break the world record for the Women’s 100-metre Butterfly S14.
As an athlete with an intellectual disability, Chan works closely with her coach to develop tailored strategies that optimise her performance. This includes innovative training methods such as visual and physical demonstrations, allowing her to achieve clarity and precision in execution. Supported by her family, friends and mentors, she exemplifies how adaptability and dedication can drive extraordinary accomplishments.
“When it was time to get into position to start, I was very focused on myself. I felt I was there to do what I needed to do.”
