Gymnast, World Artistic Gymnastics Medalist
Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo has a way of exceeding everyone’s expectations—as he did when he won the gold twice (2019 and 2021) at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship; garnered five golds at the 2022 Southeast Asian Games and another three at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship; and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics
From an early age, Yulo displayed an aptitude for the sport and began training in elementary school as a gymnastics entrant of the National Capital Region for the Palarong Pambansa. He garnered the support of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, which pushed his athletic and academic careers forward as he entered his teens.
In 2019, Yulo made sports history by becoming the first Filipino to win the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise category at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Stuttgart, Germany. He scored 84.048 points on all six apparatus and set the pace of the competition. He held his own against Russia's top gymnasts, including several former world champions.
He may only have placed fourth in the men's vault event in the Tokyo Olympics, but Yulo bounced back with a gold in his signature floor exercise event at the All Japan Senior Championships in 2021 and 2022. He took home gold medals for the floor exercise, vault, and parallel bar events at the 2022 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, where he also bagged a silver in the individual all-around event.
