For making a mark with his memorable filmmaking
Cai Chengjie struck out on his own as a director after working for CCTV. His debut film, 2018’s Mirrors and Feathers, shot in 11 days on borrowed equipment, is a satirical look at the humour and heaviness of magical realism. It won the Tiger Award for Best Film at the 47th Rotterdam International Film Festival, and Best Director and Best Drama at the domestic First Film Festival.
