Bonnie Bunyau Gustin

Para-powerlifting athlete

The Paralympian powerlifted his way to the top of his game

At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin made history again when he set a new Games record in the men’s under-72kg with a lift of 220kg and won the gold medal. He’s the first Malaysian to win the powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games.

Only last year, the Paralympian won Malaysia’s first Paralympic gold in the men’s under-72kg at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. His winning lift of 228kg set a new Paralympic record, beating that of former world champion Rasool Mohsin of Iraq, whose lift of 227kg had previously remained unrivalled since the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Sarawakian Bonnie’s interest in powerlifting started at a very young age, when he used to accompany his father, Gustin Jenang, who was also a powerlifter, to the training centre in Kuching. His older brother, Bryan Junancey Gustin, also participated in the sport at an international level.

His international debut in 2017 won him a gold medal in the Dubai 2017 Fazza World Cup. He then went on to win two gold medals for the men’s up-to-65kg category at the 2019 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, which earned him world titles in both the junior and senior categories.
