For 24 years, the paediatrician Bernadette J Madrid has been at the forefront of protecting children against abuse and violence. She headed the Child Protection Unit of the Philippine General Hospital since its establishment in 1997 and has continued her service as executive director when the unit evolved into the Child Protection Network Foundation, Inc in 2003.

Madrid’s work has gone beyond local shores as she is a member of several advisory groups on child protection such as those of the World Health Organisation, Unicef, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs for Sustainable Development Goals 16. She is also the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on violence against children.

Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, evidenced by countless recognitions she has been given. Of these, she cites a few: Outstanding Pediatrician for 2021 by the Philippine Pediatric Society, Most Influential Filipina in the World 2019 by the Filipina Women’s Network, Outstanding Service Award on Child Protective Services 2012 by the National Children’s Advocacy Center, Most Outstanding Philippine Doctor 2004 by the Philippine Junior Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.
