Berna Romulo-Puyat

Secretary, Department of Tourism

Secretary of Tourism Berna Romulo Puyat is a beacon of safe and sustainable tourism despite the pandemic

She has experienced highs and lows these past few years. Across 7,107 islands in the archipelago, Berna Romulo Puyat had successfully led a campaign that made domestic travel one of the most exciting experiences in the country. Within a month of the pandemic breaking, though, all that changed. Not only was travel restricted, but the industry saw a record-breaking loss in jobs, even lives.

She traversed public service from being the Undersecretary of Agriculture to her current position as the Secretary of the Department Tourism. Through the pandemic, she has worked closely with local government units to devise recovery plans. Baguio, particularly, has already opened up to tourism for fully vaccinated individuals and efforts in Bohol to establish a Covid-19 clinic have been underway to contain outbreaks in the tourist spot.

With the forthcoming 2022 elections coaxing a senatorial bid from her success over these challenges, Romulo-Puyat has once again exhibited her commitment and integrity in the face of politics: she has declined to run. Filing for candidacy would oblige her to resign from her current post, and Romulo-Puyat believes that there is still work to be done.
