Award-winning neurology specialist and long-standing contributor to healthcare

Professor Benjamin Ong Kian Chung is the senior vice president (Health Education & Resources) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and chairman of the Health Sciences Authority.

He is also a senior consultant with the Division of Neurology, National University Hospital (NUH), serves as a Member of the Public Service Commission and currently chairs the Expert Committee on Covid-19 Vaccination at the Ministry of Health.

Prof Ong obtained his MBBS at NUS in 1981 and later went on to train in neurology in Singapore and the UK, with fellowship attachments at the Institute of Neurology (UK) and the Institute for Molecular Medicine (Oxford, UK).

He was appointed director of medical services at the Ministry of Health (MOH) on January 1, 2014 until February 1, 2020, where he served as the principal medical adviser to the Government. Prior to that, he was concurrently the chief executive of the National University Health System and senior vice president (Health Affairs) of NUS. He has also held positions as chairman of the medical board at NUH and was head of the Department of Medicine at NUS.

He has been active in medical education throughout his career, including areas such as Neurology Specialist Training as well as postgraduate internal medicine, prior to his MOH appointment. He continued to work on healthcare professional development matters while serving as director of medical services at MOH.

Prof Ong has provided leadership in healthcare IT development and process improvement in patient care delivery, and was the chairman of Integrated Health Information Systems Singapore. His research interests are in neurology, in particular in the fields of neuroimmunology and neuroepidemiology.

Over the years, he received multiple awards and accolades for his services and contributions. In 2009, he was awarded the National Day Public Administration Medal (Silver) for his leadership contributions and in 2013, he received the Long Service Medal from the President of Singapore in recognition of his dedicated service. In 2015, he received the Public Administration Medal (Gold) for outstanding efficiency, competence and industry and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2020 for his contributions to healthcare.
